Vivian Broughton
Over the past four years we have been studying on the framework of IOPT, developed by Prof. Dr. Franz Ruppert.
We have been studying with Vivian Broughton. Vivian is Director of the Centre for Healthy Autonomy (London), is a long-time student of Professor Ruppert and his work and is an experienced IoPT psychotrauma practitioner and author of various handbooks on IoPT.
Parallel to our personal and professional study, we started a cooperation with Vivian in order to make this IOPT-work and her expertise with this framework more accessible here in the Netherlands.
This cooperation has led to very successfull educational Courses (“Who am I with(out) you? The effects of early trauma on love, sex and relationships”), led by her over the past two years.
For 2022 we have created two Courses led by Vivian:
1. Fundaments of Theory and Praxis of IOPT
A one-year course for practitioners in 2022 (in Utrecht, The Netherlands)
2. Support group for IoPT-practitioners (facilitated by Vivian Broughton)
For people who are already working with IoPT and seek further development, personally and professionally
As a practitioner you are invited to participate in one of these two Courses. See below for more information!
Fundaments of Theory and Praxis of IOPT
A one-year course for practitioners in 2022 (in Utrecht, The Netherlands)
You are invited to participate in this 1-year in-depth practitioner course in 2022 focussed on the IOPT theory and method (Professor Dr Franz Ruppert), led by Vivian Broughton.
Identity-oriented Psychotrauma Therapy (IoPT):
IoPT theory is based on a specific understanding of trauma and psychological splitting as the means of surviving trauma, and of the impact of traumatic experiences in the earliest stages of life. This includes the challenge to the child of surviving within the context in which he or she is conceived, gestated and born. Trauma is an experience that pays no attention to individual identity, and the cost to the child is a loss of self, a loss of identity. This is why we call the work Identity-oriented Psychotrauma Therapy.
Focus of this course
This course is an introduction to IoPT theory and praxis, as developed by Professor Franz Ruppert (Munich) over the past thirty years. It is open to all those interested in the topic of trauma, who wish to explore their own personal issues in a safe, closed group.
We will work with the ‘Intention Method’ of Franz Ruppert as a way to discover your own personal trauma issues and the way to address them in your life. Together we will explore the impact that early trauma has on our psyche, and what we can do to redress its effect on our everyday lives.
You will learn about the theoretical and practical qualities of IoPT from Vivian Broughton by experiential personal work, alongside basic theoretical explanation and discussion. No prior experience is necessary – just a willingness to explore yourself, and this method, in a safe group setting.
This course can also be a useful starting point for anyone who is considering becoming an IoPT practitioner.
Practical as well as theoretical learning
The Course is a combination of learning at a practical as well as at a theoretical level; Theoretically we will address the following topics:
- WHAT IS PSYCHOTRAUMA? With a detailed look at the definition of trauma and its dynamics;
- IDENTITY AND THE SUBJECTIVE ‘I’ With a detailed look at what identity is, and the question: Who am I?
- WHAT IS THE PSYCHE? What do we mean by this word Psyche, how does it work, and why should we know?
- THE INTENTION METHOD: How can we resolve early traumas?
- THE TRAUMABIOGRAPHY: What is our traumabiography?
- PERPETRATORS & VICTIMS: The dynamics involving perpetration and victimisation
- SURVIVING TRAUMA: How to we survive traumatic experiences and manage our emotional reactions?
Personal as well as professional learning
The course will consist of a mix of personal exploration, presentations and discussion. We will work with the Intention Method as developed by Professor Franz Ruppert to explore participants’ personal issues so as to increase personal clarity and practical experience.
Using personal exploration, we will reflect on the processes from a practitioner’s perspective, bringing theory to life in practice. We will do this in relation to group and the private one-to-one setting.
There is a total of six books by Professor Ruppert covering his theoretical developments, and two by Vivian Broughton. These form the basic texts for the course.
As practitioners we will create a forum to work and learn together, to start to develop our facilitation skills, our understanding of the IoPT theory and to start to develop our practical experiences for guiding individual work.
Apart from the modules, guided by Vivian, there is an option of participating in a peer group (‘intervisie-groep’). Participation is optional. Dates are to be fixed.

Support group for IoPT-practitioners (facilitated by Vivian Broughton)
For people who are working with IoPT and seek further development, personally and professionally
You are invited to participate in this 1-year in-depth support group for IoPT-practitioners in 2022 based on the IOPT theory and method (Professor Dr Franz Ruppert), led by Vivian Broughton.

Focus of this course
Participants are already working with IOPT theory and the Intention Method, or ready to start working with clients supported by the IOPT framework and method.
A fixed group of maximum 20 members will come together 6 times a year for two days of supervision with Vivian Broughton. Each member gets the possibility of facilitating another member of the group with his/her intention supervised by Vivian, as well as working with their own intention facilitated by Vivian Broughton.
There will be space to discuss the theory and practice and reflect on one’s own work as a practitioner. The event will be in English.
In working with a group of practitioners together we assume two fundamental lines of development to be essential in becoming an effective facilitator:
- ongoing exploration of your trauma with the Intention Method
Our childhood traumabiography has every impact on every area of our lives. This also has an impact on the words and actions we take when we facilitate a process. We cannot ’turn off’ our own traumabiography. Hence, often unexplored pain and childhood experiences may become our personal blindspots in supporting our clients. The danger of not being attuned with our own trauma puts the facilitator in the danger of being entangled or triggered in the facilitation process and may lead to a Victim-Perpetrator interaction with the client. Taking our own trauma seriously will be helpful in increasing our contribution as a facilitator.
- ongoing reflection on your facilitation skills
IOPT facilitation is combination of art and science. There is no specific guidebook as every trauma experience is unique in itself and hence with the process. It is important to be equipped with strong theoretical understanding of IOPT and have practical opportunities to understand the theory in practice. So learning to work with IOPT requires a contiguous practice and reflection on your work.
Learning in the community of professionals
